AI Killed Execution — Now Trust Is the Only Moat Left

You built your entire career on your ability to execute.

AI Killed Execution — Now Trust Is the Only Moat Left

Matt Shumer recently blew up X with his viral post “Something Big is Happening” From his own personal experience, he outlined how models like GPT-5.3 and Claude 4.6 have transitioned from helpful tools to autonomous agents capable of independent judgment, coding themselves, and performing multi-hour expert tasks without human intervention.

Matt states how this shift threatens to disrupt nearly all jobs within the white-collar world such as legal, finance, medicine, and engineering — not over decades, but within one to five years, creating an “intelligence explosion” where the only path to career survival is immediate, daily engagement with the most advanced tools available.

Today, I’m here to offer a bit more optimism for how people can get themselves on the right side of this colossal transformation. Literally every white-collared professional needs to find a way to survive and earn professionally over these next five years, because after that… honestly, nobody knows.

Note: Definitely listen to Matt and learn these tools, its a prerequisite for all my other suggestions.

Awareness is Always the First Step

There’s a massive shift happening right now that most people haven’t fully processed yet and its one of the primary fear drivers for working professionals facing AI displacement. The AI fear isn’t just about massive job losses or the prospect of these tools “taking over”; both of which are terrifying. It’s also about something much deeper and personal: people’s professional identities are being disrupted.

For generations, trust for professionals was built on execution. If you could produce something difficult, complex, or specialized — the business world trusted and rewarded you. Your career, your status, and your security were built on that foundation.

Guess what…. AI just broke that entire model.

That’s why this shift feels so unsettling. It’s not just tasks being automated. It’s your professional identity being rewritten.

When the value of execution disappears… All that’s left is trust itself.

Trust Redefined

Here’s the deeper truth that hits a bit harder; most people were never paid purely for execution in the first place. They were paid because someone trusted them with execution. Trust was always the real product people bought when they hired you as an employee. Execution was just the delivery system.

Trust hasn’t disappeared. It’s how you earn it that’s changed overnight. AI doesn’t make humans less important. It just makes our talents more exposed. When execution becomes easy, average thinking becomes obvious. Poor judgment sticks out and weak communication is immediately discarded. For decades, friction hid mediocrity. In this new economy where execution is abundant, it forces an uncomfortable realization:

If AI can build almost anything…Then the scarce skill is now actually deciding what should be built, why it matters, and who will come along for the journey.

This is now the new model for earning trust.

The Opportunity

The professionals who will thrive in this next era won’t be the ones who can produce the most output. They’ll be the ones who can:

  • Spot problems worth solving
  • Clearly explain vision
  • Build trust quickly
  • Align people around ideas
  • Make good judgment calls under uncertainty
  • Inspire belief in outcomes that don’t exist yet

Take a closer look. These aren’t technical skills. These are sales skills! Sales is actually just the tactical method of building trust within a business environment. AI isn’t suddenly turning us all into salespeople. AI is just removing the illusion that we weren’t all sellers already! Think about it. Underneath every job you’ve ever had, there has always been a quieter layer you didn’t pay much attention to:

  • Convincing someone to trust you
  • Convincing someone your idea is the right one
  • Convincing someone to allocate time, money, or attention to something you believed in

That’s all sales! But at its core you were always just incrementally building trust with the right people to move things forward.

Drop the Stigma — Fast!

“Sales” has always had a branding problem. People hear the word and immediately imagine quotas, cold calls, and aggressive persuasion. “ABC: Always Be Closing!” right? They think of sales as separate from “real work.” But real sales have never been about just pushing products, its been about transferring beliefs.

  • Product sells value over the next best alternative
  • Founders sell vision
  • Leaders sell direction
  • Creators sell attention
  • Employees sell ideas internally every single day

No one is new to sales. Even the best technical professionals have always been selling — they just didn’t call it that. Great engineers and product managers sell architecture decisions all the time. Doctors sell treatment plans. Investors sell conviction long before they sell returns. Selling is everywhere, everyday.

Final Thoughts

As we speak, AI is surgically removing execution from your professional value equation, which is extremely disorientating. So the faster you embrace “sales” and “trust builder” as your professional identity, the faster you will be able to distinguish yourself from others. Amplify your hidden values, such as relationship building, emotional intelligence, and your ability to lead/convince others with a compelling narrative and you will find yourself with more opportunities.

In the AI economy, the best salespeople won’t be the loudest. They’ll be the clearest thinkers. They’ll be the people who can see what doesn’t exist yet — and help others see it too. So yes, AI is changing work. But it’s not replacing humans the way people fear. It’s revealing what humans have actually been responsible for all along:

  • Belief
  • Judgment
  • Direction
  • Trust
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • And last but not least… Convincing others to follow.

The sooner you accept that you can no longer rely on execution to advance your career, the sooner you will embrace the human side of your professional identity. Lean in trust building and you will hopefully find yourself with a chair in the new AI economy and that’s something to be optimistic about.

Good luck everyone.
